Tackle Tests.
These Tackle Tests are wholly my own opinion, influenced by a lifetime of fishing and 35 years of working in and teaching machine shop skills. So I know a bit about how things are made and how to use them.
I doubt you will see any rubbish on this site, because rubbish is something I avoid like the plague. What you will see is the tackle that I use myself and the tackle used by my friends who chase big fish with me.
I have been accused of having a somewhat whimsical sense of humour so if you see something and you say to yourself "he can't be serious!" it is probably because I am not being serious...... life is too short!!
Momoi monofilament.

With the advent of braid lines, nylon monofilament is probably being used less than ever before. Having said that, for me mono still has its uses. I prefer monofilament for spinning and float fishing from boat and shore. Trolling and Sharking where the line is high in the water are other applications for which I have reels loaded with monofilament.
This bulk spool of 40lb monofilament is to reload two of my big reels for sharking, as well as for our occasional forays into the deep blue yonder for the silver bullets that sometime ride the Gulf Stream into the Western Approaches.

For that sort of fishing nothing but the very best line will do, because it might be a few years before I will get another shot at one of these fish...and the years are catching up on me!!
Momoi is a top quality Japanese monofilament and the Hi-Catch version is their general purpose catch-all quality. I have been using it for a few years and have found that the Hi-Catch is utterly reliable, with a breaking strain a bit higher than the label says. My own experience is that the stated breaking strain is about right for the knot strength, what I mean to say is, that if you tie a good knot and snug it down tightly, it will probably go at the stated breaking strain, at the knot.

I get mine from Paul Bower at Rok-Max ( www.rokmax.com ) A quarter pound spool of 16 or 20lb Hi-Catch will cost £4.95, which is a bargain for line of this quality. The 1 pound spool in the picture cost me £21.95 which will fill two of my big reels with enough left over for another fill.
This is the best monofilament I have ever used... recommended....

Accurate Fishing Pliers.

Of all the fishing gadgets which have found their way into my tackle box there are but a few that I would instantly replace if I lost them. These Accurate Fishing Pliers are one of those bits of gear that I would be lost without. Simple tasks like snipping line and taking hooks out of fish are made so simple. This is a fishing tool "par excellence". On charter boats I find other anglers taking them out of my back pocket where they usually live, snip their line, remove a hook wipe it off and put it back in my pocket. Its a good job they have the plastic tether clipped to my belt because I am sure they would have gone "walkies" before now!! They are expensive, knocking on for £100's a pair, but they are a once in a lifetime purchase, a little luxury, a birthday present from the kids or a Xmas present from the Lady in your life. Once you have got a pair you will wonder why you struggled without them for so long.

Rail Monkey.

Every now and again you see something and think "what a good idea!"  Fishing with my pal Mike Concannon a few weeks before the New Year, I saw him using one of these ingenious soft plastic Rail Monkey's, in weather conditions which I have to say were just a little sloppy. His rod bounced out of the Rail Monkey once or twice during the day, which truthfully, was to be expected in the lumpy conditions. However, apart from those instances when a big green wave bounced the rod out of the groove, the Rail Monkey worked well and I thought to myself "Inspector Gadget strikes again!" Just got to have one!!!!!!

At £6.95 plus Postage and Packing it is not something which is going to break the bank and I can see them appearing on private and charter boats, because they work so well.

There are also different size Rail Monkeys which can be used on Pier railings including Monkey's which will grip onto square section railing for the shore angler to rest a rod on.

Take a look at the Rail Monkey website which includes the option to purchase on line.
