Somerswood Trout Lake

Rainbows only are stocked at Somerswood, but they are superb fish with a minimum size of 1.5lb up to 5lb and maybe an occasional larger fish just to add spice to the proceedings. What should be mentioned specifically is that all the fish I have caught at Somerswood have been bright, fully finned fish in sparkling condition.

At a little over 2 acres, depths vary from 6 feet at the east end, down to 15 feet at the western end. Fed with water from the River Avon and natural springs the water is crystal clear year round.

When times are tough most anglers resort to montana's, viva's and an assortment of goldheads fished on floating lines and long leaders or a slow sink line. Many anglers favor small flies and very fine leaders fished off lightweight rods and lines at Somerswood. Early and late in the day buzzers and black and peacock spiders in sizes 12 and 14 will often tempt fish that are high in the water. As will dry black gnat and small dark sedge patterns.

Conventional and black PTN are favorite flies on clearwater fisheries in these Westcountry farm fisheries, with small sparsely dressed gold ribbed hares ear another firm favorite.
