Avon Dam

This rugged High Moorland reservoir is about a 40 minute(1.5 miles) walk from the car park at Shipley Bridge. The tarmac’ed track follows the river valley to the foot of the dam. On a good day this is a very pleasant walk with extensive views across the Moor, to a reservoir which is little fished.

The fishing is free to holders of a valid EA trout licence. The fishing is by spinning, bait or fly for small, brilliantly coloured moorland trout.

Typically, small dark flies fished on a fine leader say three or four pounds breaking strain will be necessary to tempt these shy, wild fish.

Flies such as sparsely dressed GRHE, black PTN, B & P spider(18’s). Dry black gnat, cul de canard emergers and tiny dark sedge patterns are all good flies to try.
