Born, lived and fished out of Plymouth all his life. Russ fished for Bass on the Eddystone Reef with Spencer Vibart and Roy Slater in the Glory days before the gill nets. About Russ. The Great reefs such as the Hand Deeps, Rutts, Brendons and Hatt Rock were where an apprenticeship in catching a variety of species was served aboard Sunlit Waters with Dave Elworthy, moving on to the “hi tech” Mk 5 Decca set when our crew began to find the wrecks with some consistency. During those days of plenty Russ held two IGFA World Records for Pollack and took the first Gold medal ever awarded by the British Conger Club for a Conger over 80 pounds. It was about this time that his friend and mentor Len Hobbs took him trout fishing on a “blow hard” day when we couldn’t go to sea. The streams and reservoirs of Dartmoor and Cornwall soon had a handful of anglers who would fish for shark one day and wild Brown or Sea trout the next... and so we fished for best part of a lifetime. Russ is the only one of that handful of anglers left to pass on that glorious Westcountry “fish any time, anywhere, for anything that swims” tradition to a new generation of anglers, which he does through his photography and articles in the angling press. Russ’s father was a Gunnery Instructor in the Royal Navy, who taught him how to use a camera, develop and print black and white photographs. His photography has moved along with his fishing over those years through black and white, colour print and transparency demanded by the magazines of the time. Now a few short years ago it was start from scratch again with the new world of digital photography.  After a career teaching engineering, Russ went full time into writing and photography in 1989. Since then he has been a regular contributor to Sea Angler and Trout Fisherman magazines in the UK, as well as European magazines such as Zee Henglesport. Creating copy and images for magazine articles, Tourist Boards, advertising and catalogue images for various tackle brands, although latterly much of his effort has been focussed on Snowbee for whom he has worked for a number of years as a Tackle Development Consultant on the Snowbee Fly and Sea tackle. Fishing for Striped Bass on Cape Cod on more than a few occasions, Russ has seen for himself how the real world of conservation has worked with the Recreational Fishing Alliance in the USA, and consequently believes that the Angling Trust in the UK needs our support to allow the “Freedom to Fish” that committed UK anglers believe is the heritage that we should pass on to future generations of anglers.
