January 2009. January not a
lot happened, apart from hospital appointments and not being a well bunny. Highlight of the week was working on the Deep Blue 3.
Fitting all the bits and electronics was amazingly complex with cables
running from one end of the vessel to the other through some big plastic
pipes, that were themselves something of a problem to get exactly into
the right place, but some brute force and cuss words persuaded them that
it would be better if they went where we wanted them!!
The Volvo QL Trim tabs were something of a revelation. Who would have
thought that dropping such a small blade into the flow of water under
the boat could make such a difference to the attitude of the boat at
speed. They were fussy to fit, but not difficult, one of those jobs that
you need to take your time and get it right. We
fitted Seiwa electronics which so far appears to be working
superbly well, with a magnificent clear picture on the navigator. The
sounder is working fine, but we have yet to get to the deep water to see
what the picture will be like in 250 feet of water. We fitted a 600 watt
tilted element transducer from Airmar, with a separate temperature
transducer so that we can find the Gulf Stream in a few months time
(hopefully it will move in our direction this year..) I am not sure that
the 600 watt transducer is man enough for the job over our deep water
wrecks and reefs, but we were assured by Airmar Europe that it would be
fine, but I am not convinced, we will see!!
More about the Seiwa electronics later when we have put some sea time in
and checked it all out on the job!
